About Me

My photo
Here I would love to share with you our travels and adventures as international mushroom consultants. MEMOIRS about husband Pieter Vedder, who was a SCIENTIFIC PIONEER in Mushroom Cultivation Education. His practical handbook is in 9 languages and is called the MUSHROOM BIBLE: https://mariettesbacktobasics.blogspot.com/2020/08/modern-mushroom-growing-2020-harvesting.html

Husband Pieter's Fond Relationship with Mushroom Growers in the U.K.

The very first mushroom farm that husband Pieter J.C. Vedder visited in the U.K. was the one from Peter Stanley-Evans. Together with his boss, Pieter Bels they did so in 1958, probably in combination with the Mushroom Fair.
Peter Stanley-Evans grew mushrooms in metal military bunk beds, 2 high in greenhouses.
He also grew chrysanthemums.
This was the 1st real excursion with board members of the Mushroom Experiment Station and the Practical Training Center for Mushroom Growing.
Husband Pieter's 1st Dutch Publication was not yet out at that time but he'd lectured at several International Congresses and wrote articles for Mushroom Magazines.
Husband Pieter is to the left, 2nd row standing. His boss, Pieter Bels is also in the 2nd row to the right and his wife Henriëtte Bels-Koning is to his left.
This was in front of a restaurant in the UK.
During one of husband Pieter's visits, Pieter Bels was talking with Peter Stanley-Evans Sr. and Pieter was discussing with Stanley-Evans Jr.
Pieter overheard Stanley-Evans Sr. say: 'Yeah, yeah, we have to realize that is the next generation...'
Sadly we learned that his (only ?) son had died rather young...

It was also this friend Peter Stanley-Evans, who invited husband Pieter with his entire group to his home for a formal Tea.
Mrs. Evans and her daughter-in-law had made the beautiful decorated little cakes themselves!
To view more photos from this excursion go here: de Champignon - cultuur 1958 - 6  via ISMS just click it.

Below this post you find the link about the beautiful Tanner Krolle Attaché, Pieter got gifted from Peter Stanley-Evans...

Very interesting old black-and-white movie from 1958 to get an idea about how it was back then: Mushroom Farm Aka Airman At Home, Mushroom Fair 1958 This was not in bunk beds but small wooden trays.
Click the link above in pink, it is 2:39 min.
Picture from David Stanley-Evans from The Mushroom Journal 1978-11
Peter Stanley–Evans was the 1986 recipient of the Sinden Award.
His lecture was published in the Mushroom Journal February 1987 issue ←click ISMS link.
1989-6 The Mushroom Journal published a nice Profile story about Peter Stanley-Evans, written by Charles Spencer. Click the link to the ISMS pdf
~
On October 9, 1990 David Stanley-Evans died...
Published to the ISMS upload from 1990-12 The Mushroom Journal click link
~
Fidlers Hall is mentioning the history of the mushroom farm. We don't know yet if Beth Stanley-Evans is maybe the daughter-in-law from said deceased son.
Just today, I got a very kind reply from a person managing the Fidlers Hall website and I will pass on the link to this post once it will get published this evening!
That way, Beth Stanley-Evans will get to read it...
Burwood House mentions the garden of Fidlers Hall, which belonged to her parents-in-law. Was that Peter Stanley-Evans?
In The Mushroom Journal 1978-5 is a very interesting article about them:
It looks like on February 14, 2000, this very special and long-time mushroom friend left this earth.
Both of us did give a seminar for International Spawn Laboratory (in 1998 being absorbed by Sylvan) for their growers/customers.
That was held at Tewkesbury Park for two days in 1994.
We still have Peter Davies letter thanking the organizer.
To quote just a few lines:
"This is just a brief note to thank you very much for a tremendous two days at Tewkesbury last week. Your hospitality was most generous and of course in Pieter Vedder you had one of the most respected names in the mushroom world.
His talks were both very interesting and stimulating — certainly food for thought when we return to our own farms..."

On February 10, 2008 published in the BBC NEWS | UK | England | Sussex | Struggling mushroom farm to close

The very MGA Mushroom Grower's Association in the U.K. also has dissolved...
Also the British monthly magazine 'THE MUSHROOM JOURNAL' is no longer.
Husband Pieter wrote several articles for them over the years.

Thanks for your visit!

Tea with Turmeric Coconut Flour Muffin

Yes, baking Muffins from Coconut Flour makes for a delicious result!
Found the recipe on line one day: Turmeric Coconut Flour Muffin Recipe and had to try it.
Here shown on the tennis tray with teacup, see below post.
I will give you the recipe below...
Ingredients
6 large eggs
½ cup unsweetened coconut milk
⅓ cup maple syrup
1 t vanilla extract
1 cup coconut flour
½ t baking soda
2 t turmeric
½ t ginger powder
pinch of salt and pepper

Instructions
Preheat oven to 350ºF. Prepare a muffin tin with 8 muffin liners.
In a large mixing bowl, add eggs, milk, maple syrup, and vanilla extract. Mix until it's well combined and the eggs begin to bubble.
In a small bowl, sift together coconut flour, baking soda, turmeric, ginger powder, pepper, and salt.
Slowly stir the dry ingredients into the wet ones, until the batter is smooth and thick.
Transfer the batter to a prepared muffin tin, dividing the batter evenly.
Bake for 25 minutes, until slightly browned around the edges.
Remove muffins from the oven, and transfer to a wire rack to cool.

Working with coconut meal is something else!
It can absorb so much liquid - surprisingly!

But in the end, the result is good and turmeric is so healthy as an anti inflammatory ingredient.

Thanks for your visit and comment!

Tea Time and Spring Flowers

One of the our daily highlights is having Afternoon Tea
Yesterday afternoon with fresh cut Fragrant Daffodils from our garden with fresh Camellias.
On my side table with the beautiful Hand Crocheted Lace topper.
A gift from dear Susan from the blog: Ava Grace's Closet and you ought to visit this sweet blogger friend!
My other dear blogger friend Celia M. High Heeled Life & Resilientista would very much approve of this Self Care Moment!
Healthy Living and Relaxing with Green Tea, Mixed unsalted Nuts, Seaweed (Costco) and Rice Cake from Whole Foods Market.
A close up of that healthy portion...
Believe it or not, two of our feline brothers LOVE each a piece of Seaweed and Bandido-boy also eats one or two Cashews!
In reply to blogger friend Jim from The Road to Parnassus I have added these photos from the type of Green Tea used...
Organic Green Tea
A Blend of Sencha & Matcha
My photos got taken with very dark weather so that's maybe the reason the tea looks strong...
Having fresh flowers is one thing but the lack of sunshine for good photography is often another!

Thanks for visiting!

{Tea in Atlanta with a Blogger Friend I Admire}

FINALLY I get to post this... Meeting a very sweet and special Blogger Friend, Tamago and her husband
Tamago writes the very humorous and fun blog: GOROGORO & NIKONIKO about her two adorable cat-boys.
Devoted Cat-Mamas together; Tamago to the right.
We enjoyed some tea and dessert at the Grand Hyatt Atlanta in Buckhead where we were staying for a free night, annual gift that comes with their Visa card's anniversary.
This makes Tamago my 6th Blogger Friend that I met in person.
It is always very special to do so.
Mr. D. with my Pieter, two devoted Cat-Daddies.
This was on June 28 of 2015.
Thank you sweet Tamago for this special photo of the two of us together!
As usual we did exchange some delicious cookies...
Again I'd baked some Amaretti Cookies from Almond Meal with Coconut Palm Sugar to bring with me.
Sweet Tamago and Mr. D. gifted us with some very special individually wrapped Macarons from the Mozart Bakery.
This very special Bakery also seems to have a restaurant and we for sure will check it out within a couple of months!
The thrill of tasting a Mango Macaron!
For the color I added these orange Hibiscus...
And of course served, using the Japanese lacquered tray with Kyushu teapot and Japanese teacup, in honor of Friend Tamago.
Sorry for having eaten this yummy Mango Macaron almost before taking a picture!
Mozart Bakery's Macarons are yummy and their tastes are:
Blueberry
Chocolate
Coffee
Green Tea
Mango
Strawberry
Tiramisu
Vanilla...

Thank you so very much sweet Tamago and Mr. D.!
Wish we would live closer and do this more often.

{Lunch with Lovely 97 Year 'YOUNG' Role Model}

After a week with funerals and such, for the Lovely 97 Year 'YOUNG' Role Model Maryan, as well as for us, we managed to have our Lunch together on Saturday at Deano's Italian
Maryan Harris has been a true American Patriot as well.
She graduated from the Wesleyan College in Macon, Georgia a First for Women colleges.
Being already a teacher, she did however join the WAVES, the women's section of the US Naval Reserve. She had a very interesting duty of coding and decoding.
You could read about this American Patriot but it has been removed...
She still is very sharp of mind and also a witty person to converse with, here with my husband Pieter.
And more important: YOUNG at heart.
Her choice was Pizza as they don't serve that very often at the nursing home where she resides...
There was enough left for taking back to her place to enjoy next day!
My choice was this Italian salad with olive oil and vinegar and added shrimps, which were so delicious and served warm!
Yes, we can brag about several great restaurants here in town and Deano's even got voted Georgia's #1 Pizza Place in 2013 and continues to earn high places.

Here I hug Maryan for her 90th Birthday and she celebrated that with Bubbly!
She also had my Mom & Dad over at her place in 2005, for Tea.
Many fond memories...
We do hope that we will be able to share many more together.
Thanks Maryan, for being such a great 'YOUNG' Role Model!

{Roses and Tea}

We did have some lovely looking roses in our garden. With the emphasis on 'looking' because for handling them they were not lovely! Very sharp thorns and thus rather prickly for arranging them inside this crystal Baccarat vase.
Looks lovely though; or not?
A healthy living snack... home baked almond cookies; my version of Amaretti cookies.
Tea and some fresh fruit.
You can see the many thorns on those stems!
Grapes are seedless...
Husband Pieter LOVES my home baked Amaretti cookies!
Sad thing is that Trader Joe's discontinued the Organic Coconut Sugar... Whole Foods Market does have it too, but they're far more expensive!
Are you also using the low glycemic index Coconut Sugar?

{My 2nd Most Popular All Time Post So Far}

It is my blogpost: {1862 Christofle Sugar Sifter Spoon 'Filet Violon'} that received the 2nd most pageviews of all time. Just click the above hyperlink...
Guess this IS a lovely presentation for a warm heart shaped waffle with hot tea served on a tennis tray with teacup from Royal Albert Princess Anne in a lovely rose pattern...
The 1862 French Christofle Sugar Sifter Spoon 'Filet Violon' is a beauty!
The silver muffineer we had made for us while living and working in Indonesia, following an antique pattern and I will show that soon.
Cupid Awake and Cupid Asleep with its original 1897 sepia photos is THE most popular, even if it has been sold right away.
Temporarily you will find this sequence on my sidebar and you can also click on the thumbnail for going there...

{Tea at Château Neercanne in the Carrière Poswick & Orangerie}

In MAASTRICHT, the capital of my Province of birth in THE NETHERLANDS, we had the XVth INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS ON THE SCIENCE AND CULTIVATION OF EDIBLE FUNGI. My husband had been lecturing many times for the INTERNATIONAL SOCIETY FOR MUSHROOM SCIENCE. So for the Millennium year we decided to fly to The Netherlands for meeting with a lot of former colleagues and friends from around the world. Even though my husband had retired, he still liked to meet with them. BUT, not having to lecture himself, as all previous years, he too could join the Spouse Programme and thus we ended up together for Tea at Château Neercanne in Maastricht.
This Tea was given in the Carrière Poswick  & Orangerie.
My husband is seated right in front of the waiter...
As you can read below, the Carrière Poswick and Orangerie is hewn into huge Roman marl caves as you clearly can see in this photo.
Balcony of The Netherlands
Funny that they call Château Neercanne the Balcony of The Netherlands... (just click above link)
It even is the only terraced castle in the Benelux (Belgium - Netherlands - Luxemburg)
This was the occasion...
First we of course did have a nice walk around this special castle that also is an UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITE.
Here I am to the right (in jeans suit from Escada) with dear friend Judy O'Neil from Canada.
This sadly was the very last time I got to see her...
We did consulting work for her husband's mushroom plants in Canada.
Sande Chase (from the blog: A Gift Wrapped Life) from East Windsor, Ontario knew Judy personally.
Judy worked from Sande's design studio years ago and they went together to High Point, North Carolina for the Furniture Show one year. Small world...
While they prepare for our Tea, we have a nice conversation with this International group.
This is a photo taken from the terrace looking at the Carrière Poswick & Orangerie where we enjoyed our tea and/or coffee.
Here I enjoy the splendid view over the Jekerdal valley.
You can have a look for yourself by watching this short video...
