Here I would love to share with you our travels and adventures as international mushroom consultants. MEMOIRS about husband Pieter Vedder, who was a SCIENTIFIC PIONEER in Mushroom Cultivation Education. His practical handbook is in 9 languages and is called the MUSHROOM BIBLE: https://mariettesbacktobasics.blogspot.com/2020/08/modern-mushroom-growing-2020-harvesting.html

Big Doors which allow for the Head–End Filling Machine and Mechanical Emptying on a Mushroom Plant

Last post I mentioned the Head–End Filling Machine so let us explain that a bit more to the readers.
Fig. 58.  The growing rooms at this farm are also equipped with the special made big doors that allows for the use of the head–end filling machine and also makes mechanical emptying of the rooms much easier.
These doors are at the head–end (in Dutch kopeinde) of a growing room!
Hence the word: head–end filling machine...
Some other Dutch/English examples

The work corridor includes the entire width in front of the growing rooms and is covered by the same roof. On the other side of the work corridor, there are separate rooms containing a hot water and steam boiler, water supply, cold store, washrooms, shower rooms, etc.
For ease of transportation, etc., the work corridor should not be too narrow; the minimum width required is 4 m. In the work corridor itself, tables for weighing, hand washing basins etc. can be placed.
Page 140 of our book: modern mushroom growing 2020 harvesting ←click for link

As in the case of walls and ceilings, the doors should be insulated properly. These doors should seal to the floor with a rubber strip, without a threshold. The doors in the back wass of the rooms should be at least 2.5 m high to facilitate the filling with slanted conveyor belts, etc.
Nowadays, however, as most shelf bed farms are using the so–called, head–end filling machine, the back doors have to be even bigger, e.g. 4.5 m wide and 3 m high. These doors hang in a special frame on rails, so that they can be lifted somewhat and then moved to the left or to the right. There are specialized companies that are making these large, insulated doors.
Fig. 124.  Principle of the head–end filling machine, developed by THILOT (now GTL Europe) in the Netherlands, to fill full–grown compost and case simultaneously by using nylon nets in shelf beds. When this kind of equipment is used, the growing rooms need to have big or double doors. Drawing done by author (P.J.C. Vedder).

Fig. 125.  Head–end filling machine for filling modern shelf bed rooms with a layer of full–grown compost on a nylon net and put on a layer of casing soil simultaneously. The machine will be fed by 2 conveyor belts with hopper; one for casing material (left) and one for compost. DOUBLE T EQUIPMENT

Te koop wegens inruil: 1 kopvulmachine t.b.v. doorgroeide compost, tevens mogelijkheid tot gelijktijdig afdekken met dekaarde, 2 transportbanden. Thilot Holland BV Lottum.
For sale due to trade–in: 1 head–end filling machine for full–grown compost, also possibility of simultaneous covering with casing soil, 2 conveyor belts. THILOT Holland BV Lottum.

Kopvulmachine or Head–End Filling Machines

THILOT now is GTL Europe and they still produce kopvulmachines or head–end filling machines

Hoping this did clarify one more profound mushroom language word...
But it sure does prove how any error does spread worldwide as one copies from each other with the use of Scraped Content...

PROFOUND MUSHROOM GROWING TERMINOLOGY and its BLOOPERS

It is indeed a special subject Mushroom Cultivation or Mushroom Growing with its very own PROFOUND MUSHROOM GROWING TERMINOLOGY!
Since over the years numerous so–called consultants and other mushroom gurus have surfaced, it is interesting to see their use of the English language.
Showing you some BLOOPERS:
Guess this one got created by someonw with cramped fingers while typing...
fung ic lim ate soultions including
Was it that hard to type including fungi climatic solutions?
Yep, if you don't date nor label your photos—those image numbers DO SHOW...
At the beginning of flash one...
A flash light might have been used when creating this photo but correctly we say:
First Break.
Flushing is done for the transition from vegetative to generative development.
See link below post for indepth information and explanation.

Just like the use of blow–down instead of cool–down or flushing.
Pinheading should be pinning
Spraying should be watering as spraying indicates the use of pesticides.

supplement, to boost, (impregnated compost)
synthetics, synthetic compost, artificial manure
Guess with impregnated compost they just mean at the moment of spawning or after that — full–grown compost...
synthetics is used for fibers but not in here
artificial manure? Really?!
Synthetic compost means compost made without horse manure but other natural ingredients.

Head fillers kept rolling off the production lines...
Mushroom Business is an interesting magazine!
Check out our new head filling machine
All they in fact try to convey is — the head end filling machine!

Trouble shouting and maintenance on Poultry, Pigs controllers, (national)
Guess he meant trouble shooting?!

Well, if all else fails you can always get this growing assistant based on artificial intelligence.

The problem often is that it is mainly based on 'borrowed' intelligence... and mostly from just scraped content.

1987 GROWING QUALITY Profound Mushroom Growing Terminology

Professional video by Campbell Soup showing Pieter J.C. Vedder's design at 0:20.

Make sure to click on CC for subtitles/closed captions!
When viewed on YouTube you also will find the information below video with clickable links.
Except for 3 clickable links that don't work—for whatever reason but you got the exact time!

Just an inside view for the clickable link.
About 10 days after casing, the white mushroom mycelium has grown sufficiently to reach the casing surface. Then the growing rooms are quick chilled or flushed. This promotes the fruiting of the mycelium into what will become the white high–quality Campbell's mushroom.
Flushing drops the air temperature from 75 to 62 degrees Fahrenheit (24°C to 16.6°C) lowers the humidity from 98% to 85% and replaces the carbon dioxide in the rooms with fresh air or oxygen.
About three days later, the mushroom mycelium starts to mass together. These star like masses expand into mushroom pins, which are the swiftly growing young fruit bodies. In a couple of days these pins explode with growth into buttons...

Here are the high quality, bright white, clean, first break Campbell's mushrooms finally ready for picking. Campbell's extraordinary commitment to quality is once again practiced in the harvesting phase of mushroom farming.
Picked by hand by its thoroughly trained full–time staff. Campbell's harvesting standards are impeccably followed. Mushrooms are picked within the guidelines of Campbell's exclusive one–touch pick and pack harvesting system.
When the selected mushrooms are all picked the beds are watered.
About seven days later another break of mushrooms appears and is carefully picked.
This process is repeated up to four times, after which the natural nutrients in the compost are depleted. Then the growing rooms are sealed and steam is injected to raise the compost temperature to 160 degrees F or 71°C for 10 hours in order to sterilize the room and its contents.

Okay that at least did explain some of the PROFOUND Mushroom Growing Terminology.
The two most misunderstood words are FLUSHING and BREAK
When viewed on YouTube you see those clickable links (except those 3 that refuse to work) but you know where to find the subjects.
~
Page 249 of our book about the generative stage with clear images.
Page 250 of our book with more about the change from vegetative stage to the generative phase.
Page 251 of our book with image from Hans Tschierpe about vegetative growth changes into generative growth.
Page 270 and 271 of our book about inducing fructification (generative stage).
Full page 271 of our book...
And again on page 273 of our book about the transition from vegetative to generative development.
Page 275 of our book about flushing to start fructification.
Page 307 of our book again mention of Relative humidity at the time of flushing for fructification.
During the actual production period we talk about break and NOT flush!
Flushing is the above—earlier mentioned change from vegetative growth into generative growth!
This is on page 115 of our book.
And again on page 278 you see the mention of break.

Hoping this did clarify a worldwide erroneous use of flush instead of break.
Sure, we both are fully aware that husband Pieter's 1978 English book has been used by many 'consultants' just by content scraping and/or plagiarism—without ever mentioning the source but we of course recognize our own original content.
The issue is that in 1978 the English translation from Pieter's updated 5th Dutch edition, got done by a lady, that knew the language well, but had no inkling about Profound Mushroom Growing Terminology...
Hence this erroneous worldwide spread by so many.
That also was way before the computer era, where one could easily correct and replace certain words.
But our book is like the text in Campbell Soup's video—CORRECT!

Thought this to be valuable for numerous mushroom growers worldwide.
On Pieter J.C. Vedder's LinkedIn it had lots of impressions:
Also a former Campbell colleague mentioned that most of it got filmed at Campbell's then Glenn Farm in Michigan.

September 9, 1969 Grand Opening practical Mushroom Training Center in Horst

On September 9, it will be exactly 53 years ago, that in Horst, The Netherlands the 1st and ONLY practical Training College for Mushroom Growing in the world, had its official Grand Opening by the Ministry of Agriculture and Fishery, a branch of the Dutch Government.
My husband Pieter founded it and he was the Principal and one of the active Teachers for decades, already since 1963, until he became Vice President Training & Development for Campbell Soup Company in charge of their Mushroom Division in the USA, Canada and Australia.
Pieter J.C. Vedder
On the way to the front door of Centre for the official opening...
Pieter on the left, holding his daughter Lizzy by the hand.
As published in the Dutch magazine de champignon cultuur nummer 8, oktober 1969:
~
~
Lizzy Vedder has just handed over the key to the Centre, attached to a bunch of mushrooms, to Ir. P. van der Schans, Director of Agricultural Education at the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, who will open the Centre shortly. – On either side of Ir. van der Schans Messrs Vedder and Ambrosius, followed by the other guests.
From the hallway area, now to the other building for the ceremony.
Front row from left: Jan Keijsers (architect); Pieter J.C. Vedder; Els Keijsers; J.L. Hendriks from Kessel with his wife; P. Keysers from Melderslo.
Second row from left: Riet Uitermark, Annemie Poels and me...
From left to right: ?; Pieter J.C. Vedder; B.J.P. (Ben) Ambrosius; A.W. (Ton) Gijtenbeek; C. Pleunis Sr.; J.G.J. (Jan) van Asseldonk.
Pieter's Dad had passed away from cancer, just two years prior to this Grand Opening.
But he was close to his heart as Pieter wore his Dad's special gold seed pearl tie stick pin...
Fortunately, Pieter's Dad was alive when Pieter's 1st and 2nd Dutch editions of Modern Mushroom Growing got published.
Since there was no educational material available for his Training Centre, Pieter had to write his own...
Translated into 8 official languages it did become the Mushroom Bible.
From left: Pieter's eldest brother Thé Vedder; Pieter J.C. Vedder; Mother Vedder; Secretary Dora Van den Bekerom.
In back from left: Roel Seubring; ?; ?; Jan Huijs; C. Pleunis Sr.
We also did hear Pieter play his accordion as well as Fennie Seubring, wife of Roel Seubring.
See also link below post...
My 2nd cousin Annemie Poels and me, helping out in serving beverages...
Wearing my own sewing creation, made from silver–blue lurex fabric.
Yes, Pieter J.C. Vedder did well, and till today, there never has been a second practical Mushroom Training Center.
In 1993 the CCO became IPC Plant (Innovatie Praktijkcentrum) or Innovation Practice Centre.
In 1999 the Practice Centre for Mushroom Cultivation became completely independent.
~
It is quite hard, for having certified and experienced teachers, with knowledge about chemistry, physics, economics and a passion for helping others!
Pieter always had his office door WIDE open and anyone was welcome with questions or whatsoever.
That was his unique policy.
That has remained so over the years, we have had numerous phone calls, even in the middle of the night and Pieter always tried to help others.
~
Of course there are various mushroom consultants, that all know 'something' about a part of the total procedure.
But often they do so, on 'borrowed knowledge' and not so much based on personal, practical experience and/or by use of scraped content.

{Jealousy Stands in the Way of Success}

Often in life we read and see around us, people that always criticize and blame others for their failure.
As MaryEllen best described it: 'Eliminate The Jealousy Factor And Success Will Follow' ←click for link to her article.
The Success Indicator ←click for link
by MaryEllen Tribby

Successful People: Compliment - Forgive others - Accept responsibility for their failures - Keep a journal - Want others to succeed - Keep a 'to-be' list - Set goals and develop life plans - Continuously learn - Operate from a transformational perspective - Keep a 'to-do/project' list - Embrace change - Exude joy - Share information and data - Talk about ideas - Read everyday - Give other people credit for their victories - Have a sense of gratitude.

Unsuccessful People: Criticize - Hold a grudge - Blame others for their failures - Say they keep a journal but really don't - Think they know it all - Operate from a transactional perspective - Secretly hope others fail - Don't know what they want to be - Never set goals - Exude anger - Hoard information and data (Yep, Scraped Content!) - Talk about people - Fly by their seat of their pants - Fear change - Watch TV everyday - Take all the credit for their victories - Have a sense of entitlement.

Guess we all can relate to the above!

From the above link of MaryEllen's article, she is citing the success of Ann Curry as read in the USA Today: 'Here's how working mom Ann Curry makes it all work' ←click the link to the article.

The message from highly successful Ann Curry about working Moms and their children:
Tell them you love them — a lot.
'You can never tell them too many times. Let them roll their eyes,' says Curry. 'Life can sometimes be, for all of us, a bully and you need to have money in the bank, that love is money, to get you through all the way to the end. Every time you say 'I love you,' you're putting money in the bank. You're not always going to be there to put money in the bank, so I say you got to stock up so it will last a long time.'

Some very valuable life's lessons!
In our career as International Consultants, we too have always emphasized the points that are listed to the left in this infographic.

{How is YOUR Blog's TRUE Presence on the WEB?}

  • As bloggers we love to get followers, comments and whatever social media connection we are participating in.
  • But HOW can we measure the OUTPUT?
  • Surely we CAN measure this and I will show you here with some examples at random, to also make clear that a high NUMBER of FOLLOWERS is often very deceiving! Bare with me till the very end; you will be in for quite a surprise!

  • Let's start with my own very humble number of 490 followers...

linkgoogle.com/webmasters

  • The world's number one site search is of course Google with 4,390,000,000 results...

  • This is my own humble site search result for those 490 followers of my blog in 189 countries.
  • Not bad; 1,840 results.

  • This is Nora from the emotion-centered Seelensachen blog in Austria, with a very high number of followers; 1,868.

Seelensachen.blogspot.com yields 1,080 results on site search (blog has been removed)

  • That is LESS than for my humble number of 490 followers.
  • Loyal readers cannot be lured in temporarily, by feeding them just emotion-centered content.
  • The Experts call that style: The vampire blogger.
A dangerous way for being emotion centered and selfish. Love the last line by Clay Morgan in his: The Undead Guide to Killing your Blog: then your online career will be in its twilight faster than Dracula can flap his cape...

  • Some writers are just brilliant with their words and it comes across rather clear; don't you think?
  • Below is an excerpt from Clay Morgan's post:

  • Meet Anita Rivera from the Castles Crowns Cottages blog.

  • Doing the site search for Castles Crowns and Cottages yields 554 results.
  • Guess that Google too did spot this Copy & Paste Master with her very vague linking to the source; if at all.
  • Does that make you feel more at ease about not having that many followers?

  • Meet Delores from Vignette Design with her 1707 members.

  • Doing the site search for Vignette Design yields 847 results.
  • She does have great and genuine content at times, all of her own but she too knows how to borrow content and ideas from big websites.
  • Again; Google knows how to spot when anyone uses thin or scraped content. Another issue is that she seldom does comment on other bloggers posts anymore.
  • I gave up on her because of that as it cannot be a one-way event. Sad fact as Delores did help me out in June of 2010, when I was as green as they come in blogging. She pointed me to a tutorial for creating the widget to have others take it with them, off your side bar. That was mighty sweet!
  • Don't you agree with me?

  • There is Katysue from Good Life of Design who obviously no longer uses her Google Friend Connect but she ranked very high with her Copy & Paste blogging style and very vague source linking (just mentioning it is from Pinterest and such).
  • But Google KNOWS that certain people are plagiarizing and they make it show up in their site search as you see above; Katysue yields only 847.

  • Another blogger is Bella from Bellas Rose Cottage with quite a high number of followers; 1464 in total.
  • She long abandoned my blog and never ever did comment, contrary to the beginning.
  • Guess I no longer did qualify for belonging to her ranks.

  • Doing the site search for Bellas Rose Cottage did yield 557 results.
  • So, Google knows that she is not out and about as much as she ought to.

  • Tammy's sincere, down to earth, happy and genuine posts with only use of her own photos did yield 1,190 with site search!

  • Meet Elisabeth from Elisabeth Welt in Germany.
  • Sure, speaking seven languages does make my horizon a little bit bigger but most bloggers do have a Google translate button so you too can visit more 'out of the box' so to speak.

  • Dear Elisabeth from Elisabeth Welt does yield astonishingly high with the site search: A MEGA 7,810!
  • So how come that Elisabeth's World (translated from German) scores THIS high?

One thing I know for sure; she is the MOST LOYAL COMMENTER in the blogger world and she posts very frequent, short posts, not those BORING long text stories that nobody has time to read.
We scan the Internet; we don't READ on the Internet.
Hah, lesson learned...?!
Elisabth also is following the COMMENT- DIALOGUE instead of the Monologue theory; she does REPLY to comments!

Another fabulous blog that I have had on my side bar for quite a while is: Fashion.
  • Sarah does have 1,249 followers.

  • Sarah also yields very high with her outstanding blog Fashion; 22,600!
  • You ought to check out those outstanding blogs and think twice about running like lemmings after something that IS NOT...
  • Okay, both my husband and I have done a lot of analyzing during our years as international mushroom consultants. I still like to do this. It teaches you how to read between the lines, how to detect genuine material from pretentious plagiarized material.
  • Somebody else did the work by making excellent photos and big deal you write a blog post about it.
  • Or those that use others' suffering as an emotion-centered bait for their blogs.
  • I do not approve of that either.
  • We all ought to bring RESPECT back into our culture.
  • As for my MANTRA it is BACK TO BASICS.
  • Like former chief evangelist of Apple +Guy Kawasaki is saying so well:

We all ought to recognize and promote other bloggers as well. It is not only about us.
  • On my sidebar I have always put some fledgling bloggers, to help them being exposed to a larger audience.

Certainly I would have appreciated that myself in my beginning period.

  • Under my Blogger Tips, you still can find several tutorials with Blogger Tips.
  • Use them as you please, that is my little contribution of Making Meaning.
  • What is your opinion about this google site search result?
  • Were you surprised by the outcome?
  • Love to hear your thoughts!

PS for Ria from the blog It’s Me this photo of her site search which did yield 708 for her 1120 followers and not 6,070 as she mentioned in her comment below. Follow the Google Webmaster guidelines by logging in to google.com and then type: site:... fill in your blog name only, as shown in above examples, leaving the http:// off. We have to compare apples with apples!
