My Sewing Creation - My Bridal Gown with Damsel Sleeves

Just like to show you my sewing creation, my own Bridal Gown with Damsel Sleeves...
No don't worry; it was a long one but I had to climb up here for the photo!
Wearing silver Gabor shoes with my gown.
Found this in the German Burda magazine in a size 34 (4).

Translated from German into English:
If you are particularly dainty and love a little unusual, we recommend you to this gorgeous dress from Qiana-Shantung. The extra drag (fastened with snaps and easily removed), the hem ruffle and the pretty sleeves are framed with delicate Valenciennes lace. Fabric usage for size 34 (4) you find in the description.

I had put the name of my late 1st husband on the Burda magazine's page... as soon as I selected this!

When I was only 15, as a girls group from the MBL - Meisjes Beweging Limburg - Girls Movement from Limburg, my Province in The Netherlands, we got dropped off from the back of a truck with flash lights and a list of things to ask, gather and accomplish.
That was FUN! Together with my best friend Ellie, we of course met some interesting boys from a town, only some 20 km (13 miles) away.
One of them was Jan Van Maris...
Sadly however, he got run over by a postal truck and killed a year later.
Frans Van Maris was his one year younger brother, whom I married.
This photo shows best the added Train with the lace all around.
As well as a clear view of those Damsel Sleeves.
The Bridal Bouquet was done by Frans' colleague Had Philipsen from Helden, The Netherlands.
Still got a photo from Stan Philipsen, his baby-boy but we lost touch.
Me, seated on the Ford Capri of my best friend Ellie's Dad who did drive us to Church.
Had Philipsen did artfully work in those pink Orchids!
My youngest 1st cousin on the Van den Munckhof side was my flower girl and I did make her dress as well.
Had Philipsen created for her also a matching bouquet.
Entering the Church...
My 1st cousin turning around to see if I follow...
In-between I did manage to visit my Maternal Grandmother who also was my Godmother in the nursing home.
She was not up to being present all day...
During reception time.
My Paternal Grandmother to my left and me with my very long hair and fresh flowers being worked into it.
Yes, that is Pieter, my present husband — then boss, congratulating all of us.
From this photo already 4 are residing in heaven; my late husband Frans, my Mom to his right and my Paternal Grandmother... And since June 30, 2019, also my Dad.

Photos are fond memories and keep such special moments alive forever.
By the way, this dress still fits perfectly...

Thanks for visiting!

  1. Hello Mariette, As a guy, I don't often get the chance to say "I was completely charmed," but this is the case here. What a beautiful wedding day, and what a coincidence that Pieter was there to be a part of it. It is just like you to include your grandmother in your happiness. Between your creative skills and the fact that you can still wear your wedding dress, we must suspect that some sort of magic is involved.

    1. Dear Jim,
Thank you for your kind words and yes, i would certainly go the extra mile for seeing my dear Grandmother on my wedding day! She enjoyed my visit and for getting to see me.
Pieter was my boss at that time, so not much of a coincidence...
Guess I inherited some good genes for staying the same since age 15.
      Hugs,
      Mariette

  3. Wow, you're so talented Mariette to be able to sew your wedding gown and the flower girl's dress.
I can't believe you are still the same size and still able to wear your dress. Great memories.
I have done a bit of sewing and actually made 3 bridesmaids dresses for my daughter and my two nieces when my younger sister got married, following a pattern of course, but I don't think I would ever attempt a wedding dress.

    1. Dearest Sami,
Well, I had not much choice as there were no size 34 wedding gowns on the market. So this was a great find in the Burda magazine. Like you, Iv'e done some long bridesmaids gowns too but only one wedding dress!
      Sending you hugs,
      Mariette

  8. What a treat to see your wedding pictures, and you are a talented seamstress for sure. I can't get over the sadness of your late husband losing his brother and then seems he did not have a long life either.

  9. I so enjoyed seeing your wedding photos. Beautiful gown you made. Your late husband reminds me a little of Bobby Darin in his picture. A handsome man your husband and his brother. I paused reading to think how it all must have felt at that time. Visiting your Grandmother on your wedding day and having a captured memory is just so wonderful. Beautiful pictures. Thank you for sharing your special day and the photo of you in your dress today. How lovely you look.
    Hugs to you,
    Betsy

  11. Ma Chère Mariette,

Oh what a beautiful bride you were and still are!! I confess to feeling very nostalgic looking at these pictures (we are close in age -- about 1 year apart, I think) and the hairdos on the young men brought a smile of fond remembrance.

You are so gifted w/a needle and thread and in many other ways as well. As you well know, Mme Mère made my wedding gown, cap and veil. She, too, was a gifted seamstress.

Like you, I had very long hair, even longer (just below my waist), but it was pulled up under my cap.

I am so touched that you shared these beautiful and sad memories with all of us.

    Merci beaucoup ma chère amie,

    Grosses bises,
    M-T

  13. I love seeing these lovely photos. What an attractive couple! You, my dear, are a talented dressmaker. Your dress is as stylish today as it was on the day of your wedding! I hope you have occasions to wear it sometimes, as you still look great in it.

Your blog reminds me that life is bittersweet: sad, wonderful and joyful at different moments.

  19. Once again, you amaze me with how organized you are with your photos. To be able to share this gorgeous dress and a special time in your life is incredible. The photo with Pieter certainly proves how your life came full circle. Not many people can say they are able to still wear a wedding dress that they actually handmade so long ago. The fact that you and Pieter stay active, especially with all the bike riding you are still able to do, is impressive and keeps you young. All the best, Tammy

  23. Oh, dear Mariette, how lovely to see you in your beautiful, hand-made wedding gown, as a sweet young bride and now, still looking so pretty. So many dear memories with loved ones now gone. I did notice your young Pieter in the photo and did a double-take, wondering if it was actually him. How special that he has been in your life all of these years. It was meant to be. Sending hugs xo K

  24. Niedlich, liebe Mariette!
