{Praying Mantis}

Most of you might know the Praying Mantis already. Just caught one on camera the other day...
Long legged insect...
At the entrance door to our Rose Suite...
Not easy to make them pose for the camera!
Told him that a white back ground would make him look better...
See how he looks at the camera?

They look like they're very nosy as to figure out what I was doing in their territory...

  2. Insects are cute, intriguing and weird at the same token! I'm not afraid of them, I don't mind them unless they're gonna bite me or something, lol! Great shot!

No, we certainly don't volunteer for being bitten by them! But it is interesting for capturing them on camera so we can see their 'faces' enlarged and study them just the way they seem to study us!

  3. Ha! My 15 year old who is 6 feet now would run screaming in the opposite direction if he saw this. He still hates bugs and doesn't even like to look at pictures of them. Strange as when he was little, he used to let ants and roaches crawl all over him when he was outside playing. When we stayed in a bungalow in Sri Lanka several years ago, there was one on the picture frame and he wouldn't even go into the room until we could get the bellboy to get it out. I sure hope he gets over his fear of all crawly things. :) Best wishes, Tammy

Let's hope indeed he gets over that stage! I've always found them interesting to look at and never had any fear of insects. Though I hate roaches.

For an insect like this I would never run as they eat different food; they never would attack a human being! Just out of curiosity and with this photo size we get to see how they really are looking.

  8. Dearest Mariette,
From the size I would say yours is probably a female. You were fortunate to find her on a bell where she could be easily photographed. I find them fascinating and elegant. Hopefully she will be around for a bit.
As you may remember we had a pair of them on our dahlias for most of the summer. We are hoping to find egg casings somewhere.
    Enjoy your week end!..........*s*

Having no idea about male and female, just got lucky for photographing the species. We observed one before but it was high on the wall of the living room and we were too far off on the balcony...
I do recall your photo of the couple you had: http://thesmartcat.blogspot.com/2013/09/wordless-wednesday_25.html
My photo was also taken on September 3...
Happy weekend to you and hugs!

  9. Hello Mariette, You are lucky to have praying mantises living near your house. They are common over here also. I have seen a number of living ones, and even discovered them in art. Last weekend, I saw some both real (dried) and carved, displayed on an altar. Unfortunately, I forgot to ask about them.

    1. Dearest Jim,
In Indonesia we have seen them also and they are very interesting to watch. You were lucky for having seen also some carved ones. The dried version is not so good... I hate that they kill exotic butterflies and such just for collecting them.
      Hugs,
      Mariette

They do live in more moderate regions so it might depend on the season or even year, if you get to see them.
